Zales to pay $100K in discrimination case

A Portland law firm announced that Zales Jewelers' parent company has paid a $100,000 court settlement in response to a racial discrimination lawsuit.

The law firm Norman, Hanson & DeTroy announced that a Cumberland County Superior Court justice found Ryishisa Morris of Portland was refused service at Piercing Pagoda, a division of Zales Corp., because of her race.

Morris first argued her case before the Maine Human Rights Commission and won a favorable decision after the 2010 incident. She was first awarded a $100,000 award plus interest fees and costs in May by Superior Court Judge Nancy Mills, according to The Associated Press, but the company appealed that decision.

That appeal was denied on Nov. 27, according to the law firm, and the settlement was paid Monday.

The AP reported that a Zales Corp. spokeswoman said the company had no comment on the case.
