Retailers may be in for a lean holiday shopping season, with 79% of Americans looking this year to spend less on gifts than usual, according to data from McKinsey & Co.

That percentage is 5% greater than the portion who were looking to economize in their 2022 holiday shopping.

On the other hand, holiday spending this year could be buoyed by recent progress in curbing inflation.

Last week, federal officials reported no change in the U.S. inflation rate from September to October — the first time that's happened in over a year. Prices still rose by 3.2%, but even that amount is modest by recent standards.

Compared to last year, how much will you spend on holiday shopping this season?
More than during the 2022 holidays (9%, 17 VOTES)
About the same as last year (46%, 88 VOTES)
Less than during the 2022 holidays (45%, 86 VOTES)
