LePage 'unhappy' with AG on Can. pharmacy ruling
Gov. Paul LePage joined a small chorus of legislators Tuesday calling for a "legislative solution" that would allow a Canadian mail-order pharmacy to continue doing business in Maine.
The governor is currently on a trade mission to China, but spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett told the Bangor Daily News that LePage is unhappy with a decision by Attorney General William Schneider that found licensing "out of state" entities like CanaRx beyond the jurisdiction of the state's Board of Pharmacy.
The Canadian pharmacy, CanaRx, currently holds contracts to serve 900 employees at the state, 220 at the city of Portland, and 83 employees at the Guilford-based Hardwood Products Co.
State officials told the BDN that the contract has already saved the state $500,000 since May and was expected to save the state more than $3 million by the end of the fiscal year in June 2013.
Two legislators – Sen. Doug Thomas, R-Ripley, and Sen. Troy Jackson, D-Allagash – told the paper that they are working on legislation that would allow the Canadian business to continue to operate in Maine, an effort that Bennett said the governor supports.
