State spikes Brunswick hospital's merger proposal
State authorities have ruled out Mid Coast Hospital's proposal to merge with another Brunswick hospital, which Central Maine Health Care is also vying to acquire.
The state's Department of Health and Human Services ruled Thursday that Mid Coast's proposal did not meet the requirements for a "certificate of need" review because the hospital's 900-page proposal was not specific about the legal acquisition of Parkview Adventist Medical Center, but instead outlined a partnership, according to the Portland Press Herald.
Mid Coast officials told the paper that the decision won't sideline their goal of merging with Parkview and plan to pursue merger discussions with Parkview leadership. Meanwhile, state officials will now look at Central Maine Health Care's proposal to acquire Parkview during a hearing on Oct. 24.
Parkview had previously signed a letter of intent to merge with CMHC; Mid Coast has consistently argued that maintaining two separate hospitals in Brunswick adds additional and unnecessary health care costs.
