19 Maine housing authorities to receive $9.5M for home upgrades

Nineteen housing authorities throughout Maine, from Sanford to Van Buren, will receive a total of $9.5 million through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Public Housing Capital Fund Program.

The money will help the municipal agencies preserve and modernize homes and meet the needs of the individuals and families who live in them, according to a news release. 

“Maine’s housing authorities provide a critical supply of affordable housing and an array of vital services to seniors, individuals with disabilities, and low-income individuals and families,” U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, chairwoman of the Senate Housing Appropriations Subcommittee, said in the release. 

The funding will be allocated as follows.

  • Auburn Housing Authority: $373,273
  • Bangor Housing Authority: $1.5 million
  • Bar Harbor Housing Authority: $262,459
  • Bath Housing Authority: $232,353
  • Brewer Housing Authority: $328,834
  • Brunswick Housing Authority: $438,463
  • Ellsworth Housing Authority: $115,643
  • Fort Fairfield Housing Authority: $181,715
  • Lewiston Housing Authority: $982,254
  • Mount Desert Housing Authority: $38,513
  • Old Town Housing Authority: $184,020
  • Portland Housing Authority: $2.5 million
  • Presque Isle Housing Authority: $502,270
  • Sanford Housing Authority: $279,990
  • South Portland Housing Authority: $715,001
  • Southwest Harbor Housing Authority: $110,004
  • Tremont Housing Authority: $47,281
  • Van Buren Housing Authority: $239,767
  • Waterville Housing Authority: $528,890

HUD provides Public Housing Capital Fund Program grants to public housing authorities annually for the development, financing and modernization of public housing properties and for management improvements.
