UNE finalizes plans for Morocco campus
The University of New England, which has campuses in Biddeford and Portland, has finalized its plan to establish a new campus in Morocco. The school in April first said it planned to open a new location in Tangier, Morocco, in fall 2013 or spring 2014.
On Friday, school officials signed an agreement to open a campus at the American School of Tangier, according to a press release. UNE's Tangier campus will house academic programming as well as student and staff residences. Students can spend a semester or a year in Morocco and take courses in science, humanities and languages. They can also take lab and other required courses online. The program is offered at no additional cost to students.
"UNE is preparing students to be innovators, leaders and problem-solvers in our increasingly global society," said UNE President Danielle Ripich. "By establishing a presence in the Moroccan city of Tangier, we are creating the cultural and educational opportunities that make this possible."
Ripich also signed an agreement with Professor Houdaifa Ameziane, president of University Abdelmalek Essaadi, to explore faculty exchanges, research collaborations and common projects.
UNE also recently signed an agreement with two Spanish universities to offer classes for UNE students and establish a cooperative graduate program through its pharmacy school.
