Federal shutdown dents Bar Harbor retail sales

October retail sales in Bar Harbor were down nearly $1 million compared with last year, most likely as a result of the federal government shutdown that closed Acadia National Park.

The Bangor Daily News reported local officials said the 16-day shutdown that started Oct. 1 caused many visitors to cancel reservations because of the closure. The paper reported Maine Bureau of Revenue Services figures for October showed retail sales at $24.2 million in October 2013, down from $25.1 million one year ago.

The drop in total retail sales included $100,000 less in lodging sales, $600,000 less in restaurant sales and $400,000 less in sales at gift shops, jewelers and other shops compared with last year. Bar Harbor’s overall drop in retail sales diverted from the trend for the entire state, which saw retail sales increase to $1.48 billion from $1.41 billion in October.
