Anbaric, Emera to submit regional transmission line plans
The Wakefield, Mass.-based Anbaric Transmission LLC and Emera Inc. are the first two companies to announce plans to submit proposals for major transmission line projects through Maine, in response to a request from New England’s six governors.
The Portland Press Herald reported Anbaric said Monday it will propose building a overland line from the Canadian border to a point on the Maine coast, then connecting with the greater Boston area by undersea cable. The project, in partnership with Cianbro Corp. of Pittsfield, would link wind farms in Aroostook County with areas of greater population density and power demand.
Separately, Emera and the American arm of British energy company National Grid will submit plans for a $2 billion project to carry renewable power from northern and eastern Maine and Atlantic Canada to Massachusetts through underground lines along interstate highways.
The projects are the first announced in response to the six New England governors agreeing to solicit transmission line plans as part of a regional effort to boost renewable energy and natural gas capacity.
The newspaper reported the nonprofit New England States Committee on Electricity, which represents the governors on regional electricity issues, is expected to issue the requests-for-proposals for the transmission projects.
Gerry Chasse, president and COO of Emera Maine, told the newspaper the governors’ plan will likely bring out a number of other proposals as well.
