It's not over yet: Question 1 opponents say recount is possible

As the dust still settles from Election Day opponents of Question 1, which hopes to legalize the recreational use of marijuana within Maine, say it’s still too close to call the race with one opposition group weighing the possibility of a recount.

As reported yesterday, the Bangor Daily News called the race in favor of legalization early in the morning, but Scott Gagnon with Mainers Protecting Our Youth and Communities told Maine Public that the race is still close to call.

But it’s not just a close race that has Gagnon ready to concede, as he told Maine Public that his group has learned that several thousand ballots have yet to be counted including 2,700 absentee ballots in Scarborough which may not have been included in the municipality’s final tally.

Gagnon added unless the vote swings “dramatically” in favor of Question 1, Mainers Protecting Our Youth and Communities are “leaning heavily toward the asking for a recount” Maine Public reported.

As of late Thursday morning, the BDN is reporting that 576 of the 603 precincts are reporting that 50.18%, or 363,518, are in favor and 49.8%, or 360,858, oppose the measure.
