Trump's vow to repeal ACA leaves uncertainty for covered Mainers

One of President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign promises was to ask Congress to repeal the Affordable Care Act during his first day of office. Now 84,000 Maine residents that have insurance coverage through the ACA may be wondering what happens next.

According to Maine Public, 20 million Americans are insured under the ACA. Michael Gendreau, the director of communications for Community Health Options, said that he’s heard from many Maine residents concerned about their coverage.

“We have had a few people ask us, ‘What does it mean for us?’ And despite all that we’ve heard about repealing the Affordable Care Act, or dismantling it, whatever language one wants to use, that the legislative process ahead is not something that’s going to be like a faucet where the ACA is simply turned off one day,” Gendreau told Maine Public.

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins told Maine Public that while there are many components of the ACA that are unpopular, other provisions, including allowing children to stay on their parent’s insurance until 26 and preventing discrimination for individuals with pre-existing conditions are popular on both sides of the aisle.
