A South Portland neighborhood could become more walkable

South Portland’s City Council voted unanimously in favor of zoning amendments for the Mill Creek neighborhood that hope to make the area, which currently is mostly large commercial buildings and parking lots, more pedestrian-friendly.

The Forecaster reported that among the changes are a trio of new districts that will allow mixed residential and commercial development, increased housing density and expanded allowances that now include public assembly and community spaces like museums, churches and schools.

“We hope [the changes] will go along with public capital investments in our streetscapes and gateways in Mill Creek to incentivize the private sector to make more investments in their properties,” Planning and Development Director Tex Haueser said at the Monday meeting, according to The Forecaster.
