Acadia visitor spending tops $186M

A federal study found Acadia National Park generated just over $186 million in visitor spending during 2011, keeping pace with the park's economic impact in 2010 while the total number of visitors dropped by around 130,000.

The study, released this week by the National Park Service, found that $183 million of 2011 spending in Acadia came from "non-local" visitors, meaning people who live outside a roughly 60-mile radius of the park.

The visitor spending total in the park service's 2010 report was around $100,000 higher than its totals for 2011. Nationwide, the report found the country's park system generated $30.1 billion in visitor spending.

The study comes as the national park system faces possible cuts if Congress can't agree on a deficit deal by Friday, which would trigger automatic cuts to the federal budget.

WCSH6 reported that the automatic cuts would drop Acadia's budget for the period from March through September by $390,000.
