BIW to lay off 191

Bath Iron Works will temporarily lay off nearly 200 workers due to a delay in work on the next generation of Navy destroyers.

The Bath shipyard will lay off 191 workers on Nov. 13, according to The Times Record. The bulk of affected workers are electricians, pipefitters, tinsmiths and shipfitters. BIW spokesman Jim DeMartini told the paper the layoffs are a result of a workload gap between work on the DDG 51 program, BIW's mainstay, and work on the new DDG 1000 class destroyer. In June, the shipyard temporarily laid off a total of 166 workers in three rounds, and nearly 90% of those workers have since been recalled, DeMartini said.

The affected workers in this round of layoffs are expected to be called back soon after the start of the new year, according to the Associated Press.
