Blue Cross breach exposes physician info

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield is warning Maine's 4,000-5,000 practicing physicians that a security breach at a national licenser has exposed their personal information.

Anthem, the state's largest health insurance company, has sent letters to health care providers revealing that their names, addresses and tax identification numbers were exposed when someone stole a laptop from an employee at Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, a national association to which Anthem doctors belong, according to the Portland Press Herald. Gordon Smith, executive vice president of the Maine Medical Association, told the paper he believes nearly all of Maine's physicians will be affected. The laptop was stolen from Blue Cross' headquarters in Chicago in August, but it is unclear why Maine physicians did not learn of the breach sooner. So far, no reports of identity theft in Maine related to the breach have been reported, Smith said.

No medical or patient information was compromised.
