International WoodFuels is building a wood pellet plant in Burnham that will employ about 35 people, according to the Associated Press.
The announcement was made prematurely through details posted on Gov. John Baldacci's online schedule. More details will be released tomorrow at a formal press conference in Portland. "We are having an announcement tomorrow," Matt Jacobson, CEO of Maine & Co., told Mainebiz. "The governor's schedule is correct."
The Waldo County mill will produce up to 100,000 tons of premium pellets annually, the AP reported. International WoodFuels has offices in Portland and San Diego.
This is a great example of the local jobs created by renewable fuels, or more specifically wood pellets and other biomass. Wood pellets typically come in 40 lb. bags, or ship by the ton (on a pallet.) Needless to say - its heavy freight, and where there is a local market - the product should logically stay local. That means the product will be harvested from local scraps, trucked to a local plant, made locally, distributed locally, and sold to locals.
Due to Maine's EXISTING supply, demand, and facilities, Maine has a unique opportunity to capitalize on this energy-economy. In addition to providing local (not Middle-Eastern) jobs, each ton of wood pellets will offset one ton of carbon, and will help strengthen National Security. Way to go Maine!
