Community colleges land $13M IT grant

A consortium aimed at boosting the number of information technology workers in the state will get $13 million in federal funds to expand degree and certificate programs at the state’s seven community colleges.

The U.S. Department of Labor grant will benefit the “Maine is IT!” consortium of employers, work force development agencies and industry associations. That consortium — which will collaborate to  offer two-year IT degree programs, one-year IT certificate programs and create new pathways to employment for those students — is projected to serve 2,100 participants over three years.

Each of the colleges also will use the funds to pilot new instructional approaches and share findings across the colleges and institutions in the network.
