Gathered around their class hard hat, Maine Construction Academy’s inaugural construction immersion program class of 2023 graduated earlier this month.

All graduates were either current or past students at a local area high school and leave the program with nationally recognized certifications, hands-on and classroom experience in many different trades, and a pathway toward a career in the construction industry.

The construction immersion program, managed by the Associated General Contractors of Maine, is being provided across Maine this year, providing basic work-ready certifications and multiple craft exposures for students through hands-on experience and job site visits. At the completion of the program, participants will be offered guaranteed interview opportunities with Maine companies, where they will move on to either a post-secondary education or a registered apprenticeship program.

“This program is exactly what Maine needs,” said Eliza Kenigsberg, the career aspirations and extended learning opportunity coordinator at Aspire Gorham, a program of the Gorham school district that collaborates with businesses and community organizations in and around Gorham. “It is smart, well-coordinated and every detail has been considered to ensure participant success.”

Chartered in 1951, the Associated General Contractors of Maine is the state’s largest construction industry trade association. The Association maintains an office in Augusta and has over 185 members statewide. Member companies include general contractors, sub-contractors and service and supply providers.

Maine Construction Academy brings together industry, K-12 education, higher education, workforce development teams and local workforce boards. AGC Maine decided to focus first on out-of-school and in-school youth over 16 for the construction immersion program, but there are plans to expand to the adult population.
