Firm reveals money-saving papermaking additive

Cerealus Holdings LLC, a Waterville-based chemical processing company, has developed a new additive it said could save money for mills in the papermaking process.

The Portland Press Herald reported the company recently finished running commercial trials on the new additive called Cerenano, the fifth product it has developed for paper mills. Tony Jabar, the company’s CEO, told the newspaper that the additive enhances the strength and quality of paper by improving the property of nanocellulose.

Jabar said the additive could allow paper mills to start making paper with higher percentages of nanocellulose to save them money — a process that has previously been cost-restrictive because of how nanocellulose can make it difficult for paper to drain and dry.

Jabar was named by Mainebiz as a Nexter in 2010, an honor that recognizes people who the publication’s staff think will influence the future of Maine’s economy.
