International Marine Terminal gets a boost

A new reach stacker – a vehicle used for handling intermodal cargo containers – is scheduled to be delivered this evening to the International Marine Terminal in Portland, where it will be used to move containers and oversized cargo more easily at the terminal.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the Maine Department of Transportation approved an emergency expenditure of approximately $620,000 to purchase the reach stacker, which was manufactured in Poland by Kalmar, a company that builds cargo-handling machinery for terminals around the world, and shipped on an Eimskip vessel from Hamburg, Germany.

Patrick Arnold, director of operations for the Maine Port Authority, which manages the terminal, told the newspaper that the new equipment will be a big improvement over container-moving equipment that has been unable to keep pace with increased container volume at the terminal since Icelandic shipping company Eimskip moved its North American headquarters to Portland last year.

The newspaper reported that Eimskip is now on pace to move about 5,000 40-foot containers a year, a shipping volume that is expected to increase.
