Eimskip docks first ship at new home in Portland

The Icelandic shipping company Eimskip docked its first container ship in Portland Wednesday in preparation for the start of regular service from the company's new headquarters.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the Reykjafoss, one of two container ships that will make calls in Portland, brought a load of empty cargo containers and chassis to Portland's International Marine Terminal late Wednesday.

Eimskip plans to ship goods from Europe to Portland and connect with Pan-Am Railways lines leading to Canada and other parts of the United States. Eimskip generally ships seafood in its refrigerated cargo containers, but Gylfi Mar Geirsson, who will run the company's Portland operation, told the paper the service will bring in "anything and everything."

The company hopes that businesses here will fill the container ships with goods to send back to Europe.
