After two years and a cost of $59 million, a new medical office building has opened on the Scarborough outpatient campus of Maine Medical Center.

Maine Medical Partners, the Portland hospital’s primary care and specialty-practice arm, has opened a 108,000-square-foot clinical services center off U.S. Route 1 and plans to house a variety of practices there, according to a news release Wednesday. They include neurology, neurosurgery, rehabilitative medicine, vascular surgery and otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat) medicine.

The otolaryngology and vascular surgery practices have moved from offices in Portland and began seeing patients in the new location, at 92 Campus Drive, this week. The neurology and neurosurgery practices will relocate from their sites in South Portland and Scarborough to the new facility over the next two weeks.

About 400 staff will work at site, a Maine Medical spokesman said.

The new center will benefit patients by allowing them to receive a wide range of treatments, diagnostics and imaging in a single location, according to the release. The three-story facility includes exam rooms, procedure rooms and doctors' offices, as well as a new MRI and new otolaryngology services, including allergy therapy, audiology and a balance center.

“The new facility will dramatically improve the experience of patients visiting these practices,” said Dr. Joel Botler, president and chief medical officer of Maine Medical Center. “They will receive top-notch, patient-centered care at a facility that’s right off the highway.”

On Wednesday, the new Maine Medical Partners facility was up and running, although some practices have yet to move in.

Construction began in late 2019 after the project received town approval. SMRT Architects and Engineers, of Portland, was the architect and Consigli Construction was the builder.

The Scarborough campus includes 500 parking spaces and four other medical buildings that have gone up in recent years, housing an ambulatory surgery center, a cardiology practice, diagnostic labs, the Maine Children’s Cancer Program, the Maine Medical Center Research Institute and other programs.

Maine Medical Center is the 637-bed flagship hospital of MaineHealth, the state’s largest health care system.
