Memorial bridge to reopen after repairs

The Memorial Bridge between Maine and New Hampshire is expected to reopen in three weeks following a $30,000 repair.

The two states will split the cost of the temporary repair of gusset plates, whose deterioration prompted transportation officials to shut down the bridge to vehicle traffic earlier this month, according to The Associated Press. Officials had questioned whether the bridge would be repaired before its planned demolition in 18 months, but repair costs were lower than expected.

In related news, a task force appointed by the governors in both states released its recommendations for ways to fund replacing the Memorial Bridge and rehabilitating the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge, expected to cost $500 million over the next 30 years. Among the recommendations is establishing a reserve fund funded by contributions from both states that will draw interest until the money is needed, according to The AP. In October, the bridge replacement project won a $20 million federal grant.
