PUC asks Statoil for specifics on offshore wind
A majority of Maine's Public Utilities commissioners said they won't support an offshore wind project in the Gulf of Maine if the proposal by Statoil North America does not provide the state greater confidence that the project will reap long-term benefits.
The Norwegian energy company told the Bangor Daily News it had hoped to receive a unanimous decision on its wind pilot project Thursday. Two of three commissioners said they would not approve the proposal as written.
Now, the company says it will go back to the drawing board on the Hywind Maine proposal to build four floating wind turbines about two miles off the coast, expected to generate around 12 megawatts of energy.
In mid-September, the state's top energy official questioned the impact of Statoil's proposal for electricity customers and requested more evidence that the state would see a return on investment for the project.
