Shaw's cuts 700 New England jobs

Shaw's Supermarkets Inc. announced 700 layoffs at stores across New England, but company officials would not say how many of those cuts are in Maine.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the West Bridgewater, Mass.-based supermarket chain did not detail how the 700 cuts were distributed among its 169 stores and 17,000 employees across New England.

The paper reported that the announcement followed the posting of second-quarter losses from Supervalu, its parent company, which made an earlier announcement that it was considering selling all or part of its holdings.

Last month, the company also announced it was targeting 60 stores for closure, including 38 retail food business stores and 22 of its Save-A-Lot discount grocery stores.

The company, which operates the third-largest group of grocery chains in the country, saw a loss of $111 million in the second quarter of this year compared with losses of $60 million for the second quarter of 2011.
