Six Maine organizations receive USDA microenterprise grants

Six organizations in the state received U.S. Department of Agriculture grants to help microenterprises start up and grow, U.S. Sens. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Angus King, I-Maine, announced on Monday.

The Rural Microentrepreneur Assistance grants range from $17,706 to $49,636 and total $196,124.

The six organizations receiving the grants are:

  • Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments in Auburn, $41,914.
  • Northern Maine Development Commission in Caribou, $49,636.
  • Coastal Enterprises, Inc. in Brunswick, $31,858.
  • Community Concepts Finance Corporation in South Paris, $35,906.
  • Eastern Maine Development Corporation in Bangor, $19,104.
  • MaineStream Finance in Bangor, $17,706.

The program encourages the development — whether by startup or expansion — of small businesses in rural areas. Funding through the program offers organizations support, guidance and education for self-employment and small business development.

“These investments will give invaluable assistance to Maine entrepreneurs by providing resources and training for new, innovative industries, particularly those located in rural areas,” Collins and King said in a joint statement. “We are pleased that these programs continue to support local businesses and help create stable, high-paying jobs for Mainers.”
