Winslow to step up efforts to collect unpaid taxes from businesses

The town of Winslow plans to take business owners to court to try to recover more than $45,000 in unpaid personal property taxes and interest dating back to 2009.

The Morning Sentinel reported that the Kennebec County town’s approach is unique among other area towns who are also owed tens of thousands of dollars from businesses.

As of October, the town was owed roughly $45,400 as a result of unpaid personal property taxes, taxes owed to local municipalities for business assets such as equipment, the paper reported.

Unlike unpaid property taxes, which allow municipalities to eventually seize properties, there isn’t a process to easily recover the money or assets.

Winslow is also considering implementing an annual license for businesses in town that would require businesses to be up to date with their taxes.
