Greatest achievement: I am uncertain that there is one thing that stands out among the rest. I find a great sense of achievement in my naval service, moving back to Maine, starting a family and finding professional fulfillment in support of Mainers.
Passion project: My wife and I bought a piece of land in Oxford County a long time ago with the dream of building a cabin. We chip away at the work a little bit each year hoping to finish by the time our young kids are ready to go skiing.
Lightbulb moment: During my master’s program, I read a lot about economic development policy and outcomes. This time was influential in determining what I wanted to do when I moved back to Maine.
Influential book: “The Untethered Soul,” by Michael Singer. I have always struggled with mindfulness and being in the moment. This book and concept were so different from anything I had read before and helped me at a time when I needed it most.
Personal hero: Joshua Chamberlain. I wrote my undergraduate thesis on a Chamberlain model of leadership for military officers based on scholarship, commitment, and compassion.
Favorite movie: I’ve always loved the movie “Master and Commander” and wished they made more movie adaptations of the books.
Favorite quote: During Plebe Summer at the Naval Academy, we were required to memorize various speeches, poems, songs and other “rates.” One of the speeches we had to memorize and recite was “The Man in the Arena” by Teddy Roosevelt. It encourages you to take risks in support of a worthy cause and to bolster your courage in the face of criticism.
Best way to recharge: I am lucky to have two toddlers at home, so when I am not at work, you can find me playing tea party, building forts, and riding bikes around Brunswick.
Maine’s biggest challenge: Ensuring that all Mainers have access to opportunities to build a sustainable and prosperous future.
Dinner party guests: Frances Perkins, Joshua Chamberlin and Ed Muskie. Three Mainers that led in uncertain times with resolve.
