A Look Back: A return from the ashes

When Helen’s Restaurant burned down in 2014, Machias lost what had been a focal point of area life. The local chamber director told Mainebiz in our June 1, 2015, issue, “It was like a death in the family.” But the community banded together with fundraisers and help for the eatery's 50 employees. By mid-summer of 2015, owners David and Julie Barker had rebuilt the iconic Helen’s. Once again, it became (and is) a gathering place.

Fun fact: The Mainebiz issue of Dec. 14, 2015, reported on a $20 million deal that included the Ocean Gateway parking garage on Fore Street in Portland, as well as a vacant 1.3-acre parcel — now home to the AC Hotel and the 20 Thames condo development.
