AG: ME gas stations not price gouging

Attorney General Steven Rowe says retailers or wholesalers in Maine are not overcharging for gasoline.

"The prices are high all across the country," Rowe told the Bangor Daily News. "We monitor on a weekly basis the prices in Maine relative to those in other states. The retailers are passing on the price they pay and are getting a reasonable margin." But if someone suspects a gas station is price gouging, Rowe urged that person to contact the AG's office.

Chris Jackson, vice president of the Maine Oil Dealers Association, told the paper that while the profit margin on a gallon of fuel varies among retailers, most are making five to 10 cents a gallon. He added that small convenience stores across the state are struggling with higher wholesale and delivery costs.
