Alcom denies union-busting allegations
Alcom Inc., a Winslow-based trailer manufacturer, is denying allegations that it fired five workers for their efforts to unionize.
The Maine AFL-CIO issued a statement this week that the employees, who were seeking to join the Laborers International Union of North America, feel their terminations were connected to that effort.
Alcom President Trapper Clark denied those allegations to Maine Today Media and MPBN, saying that no employees have ever been fired for that reason. He said the reason the five employees were fired is confidential.
Union organizer Devin Mayo told MTM that the workers started organizing because of intimidation in the workplace. Corey Gerard, an employee at the company for two years, told MPBN that he was not given a clear reason for his termination, which he said took place in front of co-workers.
The AFL-CIO says it wants the workers to be reinstated and that they plan to file a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board. Clark has defended the company's actions.
