Big Gig to hold its first business pitch-off of the season

Three Maine entrepreneurs, focused on cycling and schools, will vie for $500 and a chance to win $5,000 during the first Big Gig Pitch-Off of the season.

Since 2012, the aim of the event is to create a network of innovators and entrepreneurs and bring economic growth to communities in the Bangor area.

The participants competing in Tuesday’s virtual pitch event are:

  • Josh Fox, of Tidal Bore, which developed Survue, a bicycle tail light which harnesses artificial intelligence to detect hazardous drivers and warn the motorist and cyclist of one another
  • Lee Sowles, of Kind Mind, a social and emotional learning curriculum for elementary schools
  • Brenden Westin, of Dura Bike, which has created a bike fleet system for those with chronic breakdowns, poor performance and expanding service costs.

The virtual event on Tuesday will be vetted by the viewing audience and judges to determine who will win the $500 prize and compete for the large prize.

The panel of judges includes Jason Clay, director of operations for Governor's Restaurant; Josh Hayward, co-founder of PracticeOn; and a representative from the Maine Technology Institute.

While the judges deliberate, Justin Hafner, CEO and co-founder of KinoTek, will talk about how he went from a Big Gig finalist to leading a successful Maine startup and being selected as a winner in the Rising 25 Awards, which recognize young leaders in the U.S. sports industry. KinoTek is a digital health startup using artificial intelligence and computer vision to improve movement analysis.

Tuesday's event will be held by Zoom from 5:30-7:30 p.m., and more information is available here.
