BIW destroyer work at risk

Bath Iron Works saw lucrative work potentially disappear as a House Armed Services' subcommittee late last week voted to eliminate $3.6 billion in funding for a DDG-1000 destroyer that would have been constructed at the Bath shipyard, according to the Times Record in Brunswick.

Two DDG-1000 class destroyers are already under construction at BIW and Pascagoula, Miss.-based Ingalls Operations, according to the newspaper. The funding cut by the House subcommittee was for a third DDG-1000 class destroyer included in the fiscal 2009 defense budget.

The Senate Armed Services Committee still proposes fully funding the third destroyer, so the project is not completely dead in the water. If the two chambers' pass conflicting defense budgets, the two committees would meet to come to a compromise.
