BIW seeks dismissal of union lawsuit

Bath Iron Works is asking a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit filed by a union that represents about 3,000 of the shipyard’s workers.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the lawsuit was filed by the International Association of Machinists Union Local S6 in April over allegations that the shipyard violated a union contract by seeking to change job descriptions without a formal negotiation.

BIW wants the lawsuit dismissed so it can continue with arbitration scheduled for the end of May. The union said the job changes should be part of its 2016 contract negotiations with the shipyard.

BIW is seeking the changes to reduce the need to switch employees for different tasks. It’s part of a larger effort by the shipyard to cut down on costs in order to compete with other shipyards for future shipbuilding projects from the federal government.
