The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers will not restore local control of Local S6, the largest union at Bath Iron Works, after an investigation substantiated claims of fiscal mismanagement and "widespread viewing of pornography" on union computers.
In a letter sent this week to Local S6's 3,200 members, International President Thomas Buffenbarger wrote that an investigation conducted in April by a union committee concluded "the evidence was more than sufficient to continue the trusteeship." He cited "the most serious charges" as $27,000 in missing union merchandise, "hundreds of thousands of dollars" of lost-time reimbursements unaccounted for, "widespread viewing of pornography" and a failure to handle grievances in a timely manner. The international union in March placed Local S6 under trusteeship.
The international union's decision to keep the local chapter in trusteeship does not address the issue of suspended local leaders, according to Buffenbarger's letter, but control of the union will return to its officers "just as soon as the operations of the Lodge permit." A lawsuit filed by four of the suspended local leaders is pending.
