BIW's Shipway to lead industry association

Dugan Shipway, president of Bath Iron Works, has been elected to take the helm of the American Shipbuilding Association as its chairman.

The ASA is a national trade association for the shipbuilding industry and represents the country's six largest shipyards and more than 94 companies that manufacture ship systems and components. As chairman, Shipway will advocate for the larger shipbuilding industry during a time when the U.S. Navy will make important decisions about its future shipbuilding requirements. Shipway will hold the ASA chairmanship for two years.

Shipway has led BIW, which is owned by General Dynamics Corp., since 2003. At BIW, Dugan has led the way in introducing larger module construction to reduce costs and has spearheaded facility investments to make possible the "Ultra Hall" module construction facility, according to a press release from the ASA.

"Being elected to this position by my shipbuilding industry colleagues recognizes the hard work and success achieved by the men and women of BIW in building great ships for the U. S. Navy," Shipway said in a statement supplied to Mainebiz. "The shipbuilding industry will face many challenges and I look forward to working with the rest of the ASA board members to ensure a solid shipbuilding industrial base is available to support the future needs of our nation."
