Borealis Breads expands in tough times

Today, Jim Amaral, owner of Borealis Breads in Wells and Waldoboro, is paying $39 for the same 50-pound bag of white flour he could have bought for $8 two years ago.

Despite the increased cost of flour, not to mention the cost of fuel for his delivery vans, Amaral, who founded the artisanal bakery in Waldoboro in 1993, is expanding. In January, he purchased retail space in Portland that he plans to open as a cafe this summer.

The retail expansion is part of Amaral's plan to protect his business from increased costs and competition in the bread market. Read more about Borealis Breads and Amaral's plan in the current issue of Mainebiz, available online today.
