Boston company bringing nearly 1,000 new jobs to Maine

It didn’t take long for the soon-to-be former L.L. Bean call center location in Bangor to find a new tenant — a company that’s bringing 450 new jobs to the Penobscot County city.

But the good news doesn’t stop there as Boston-based home goods e-commerce storefront Wayfair will also bring 500 new full-time jobs to Brunswick during the process.

Company officials at Wayfair say that the Bangor location will primarily serve as a customer service call center, while the Brunswick team will be focused on inside sales and fielding individual customer requests for assistance in navigating Wayfair’s vast inventory, according to The Bangor Daily News.

"Our new Bangor and Brunswick locations will enable us to scale customer service and sales operations to keep pace with our rapidly growing customer base," Wayfair spokeswoman Jane Carpenter said in a prepared statement. "The state of Maine has been a great partner in making this all possible and we are very excited to expand the Wayfair team in Maine."

The move to Brunswick serves as another major addition to the Brunswick Landing business campus located at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station.

The 3,300-acre campus specializes in developing progressive and innovative businesses in the fields of aviation, biotechnology, information technology and renewable energy. Wayfair would become the location’s single biggest employer, falling 150 jobs short of doubling Brunswick Landing’s current workforce spread across 83 employers.

According to the BDN, city officials say preparations for Wayfair’s big move into Bangor will begin on May 1, with the company expecting to occupy the space in August, while the Brunswick location is scheduled to begin operating in June.
