Call center eyeing Maine town

A growing Virginia telemarketing firm has chosen Pittsfield as one of four finalists, the only one in Maine, in its search to locate a new call center that could employ up to 200 people.

Global Contact Services has been working with Pittsfield and state officials for about a year on the prospective call center. Company officials say they were attracted to the community because of the vacant call center that was home to ICT Group until 2003, but that the decision to come to Pittsfield rests solely on workforce availability, according to the Bangor Daily News. The company, which employs 1,500 people at 11 call centers across six states, plans to hold a two-day job fair in Pittsfield on Jan. 17 and Jan. 18 for prospective employees.

"Two hundred jobs with competitive wages and benefits would be a real boon for the state of Maine and the region," Kathryn Ruth, Pittsfield's town manager, told the paper.
