Organizers of the campaign for an Oxford County casino have admitted the legislation for the facility is flawed.
Dean Harrold, the Las Vegas developer and vice chairman of Olympia Gaming, the Nevada company that recently purchased a controlling share in the campaign to locate a casino in Oxford County, said he disagrees with elements of the legislation voters will consider on Nov. 4, according to the Portland Press Herald. If voters pass the November referendum question to allow a casino somewhere in Oxford County, related legislation crafted by Seth Carey, the Rumford attorney who launched the campaign, will become law.
Harold doesn't think the minimum age for playing slot machines should be lowered, or that the casino's president should sit on all boards and agencies that would benefit from casino revenue, the paper reported. Pat Lamarche, the referendum's spokeswoman, urged voters to trust that the Legislature would alter the law if it was passed in November.
Dennis Bailey, executive director of the group opposing the casino, Casinos No!, worries the gambling bill won't be properly rewritten if it passes because of pressure from gambling interests.
