Just in time for summer, Portland's Coffee By Design aims to make a splash in the fast-growing ready-to-drink coffee segment with a canned product called Chilled.
The beverage is made with the company’s 1994 Blend coffee, in a nod to the year the coffee retailer and wholesaler was founded.
Chilled is priced at $4.99 for a 12-ounce can, and $19.94 for a four-pack. Cans, designed by Auburn marketing agency Warp + Weft, are being sold at Coffee By Design coffeehouses in Portland and online.
Ready-to-drink coffee is made from brewed coffee that is chilled, in contrast to cold-brew beverages that are brewed at low temperatures.
Coffee By Design's move comes amid projections that the U.S. ready-to-drink coffee market will register a compound annual growth rate of 7.75% between 2022 and 2027, according to Mordor Intelligence, a market research firm.
"We are thrilled to introduce our new ready-to-drink product line, Chilled, which brings the unique flavor of Coffee By Design to the rapidly expanding beverage category," said Mary Allen Lindemann, Coffee By Design's owner and chief creative director. She was recognized as a Mainebiz Woman to Watch in 2019.
"As with all our creations, Chilled showcases the exceptional taste that our brand is known for,” she added. “We are excited to share this new product line in our coffeehouses this summer and look forward to the roll out of additional varieties to come."
Coffee By Design coffeehouses are at 1 Diamond St., India Street, and Congress Street in Maine’s largest city.
Until recently, the company also had a retail location inside L.L.Bean’s flagship store in Freeport, but closed it in advance of a major revamp of the campus.
On the wholesale side, Coffee By Design has 650 customers worldwide.
