Cianbro to buy former Pittsfield shoe factory

The Cianbro Cos. yesterday laid out its plans to turn the former San Antonio Shoe factory in Pittsfield into its East Coast training center.

The Pittsfield-based company, the East Coast's largest civil and heavy industrial construction firm, wants to consolidate its training, now conducted in Maine, Connecticut and Maryland, in the 75,000-square-foot former shoe factory, which it is under contract to purchase, the Bangor Daily News reported. Pittsfield town planners yesterday gave the approval to the company's proposal.

The factory was shuttered over the summer after Texas-based San Antonio Shoe closed its only Maine factory and laid off 145 workers, according to the paper. The Cianbro Cos. has $450 million in annual sales and more than 2,500 employees.
