Co. settles MaineCare billing suit for almost $100K

Bridges of Maine LLC, which provides services to people with mental and physical disabilities, has agreed to pay $99,100 to settle claims that it improperly billed the state's Medicare program.

The U.S. Attorney's Office announced the settlement Wednesday, bringing an end to the investigation covering a period from June 12, 2007, to June 17, 2008. During that time, federal investigators said the company inappropriately billed MaineCare for work done by a former licensed social worker who was previously excluded from participation in all federal health-care programs.

Investigators said Bridges of Maine, with offices in Gray and South Berwick, was cooperative during the investigation.

Editor's note: This item was edited to correct the corporate status of Bridges of Maine, which was initially reported as a nonprofit.
