Construction on two major housing projects in Portland to begin next year

Portland’s Planning Board has approved two housing projects that could add more than 200 units to the city by the end of 2017.

The Portland Press Herald reported the developers of the two projects hope to begin construction next year.

J.B. Brown & Sons received conditional approval for a mixed-use development at York and High streets on the site of the former El Rayo Taqueria and El Rayo Cantina restaurants. The project will include 63 market-rate apartments and a two-level parking garage.

Hawthorn Retirement Group also received approval to build a 150-unit independent senior housing complex at 802-828 Ocean Ave. Construction is planned to begin in May and finish in 2017.

More than 100 market-rate units have been built in Portland over the past two years, and the city has permitted hundreds of other, the Press Herald reported.
