Current Publishing taps new publisher

Westbrook-based Current Publishing, the owner of weekly newspapers in southern Maine, has hired media executive David Flood as publisher of its three York County papers.

Flood is now publisher of the Sun Chronicle (Biddeford, Saco, Old Orchard Beach), the Reporter (Waterboro, Alfred, Lyman, Newfield, Limerick and Shapleigh) and the Weekly Observer (Sanford, Lebanon, Acton). He has also been named president of York County Publishing, a wholly owned subsidiary of Current Publishing. The move will strengthen the company’s presence in York County, according to a press release. The company plans to open a Sun Chronicle office in Biddeford by April. Current Publishing also publishes three weekly newspapers in Cumberland County.

Flood, of Biddeford, and his wife, Carolyn, started Mainely Newspapers Inc. with the launch of the Biddeford-Saco-OOB Courier. The company expanded to six weekly newspapers in southern Maine, including assets in Scarborough, South Portland, Kennebunk, Gorham and Sanford. They sold the assets of the company in 2007 to Mainely Media Inc.

Flood intends to resign as a Biddeford city councilor.
