Decades-old Mexican restaurant in Portland shutters permanently

A Mexican-cuisine restaurant that began in Portland 44 years ago, Tortilla Flat, has shut its doors for the last time.

The eatery and cantina, at 1871 Forest Ave. in the Riverton neighborhood, closed permanently and without explanation on Sunday. While staffing has been a challenge for most restaurants in Maine, a Facebook post on Monday afternoon offered no hint of the reason for the closure.

“All good things eventually come to an end and it’s been an amazing ride!” the post read.

The post, signed by “the Powell family,” expressed thanks to the restaurant’s employees and customers, and encouraged diners to visit another Tortilla Flat branch, in Merrimack, N.H.

Tortilla Flat arrived on Portland’s restaurant scene in 1978, when the city offered few Mexican or Tex-Mex dining options. Serving a moderately priced menu, the establishment was long popular with families and happy-hour crowds.

The restaurant’s name refers to the title of the 1935 John Steinbeck novel, portraying a group of Mexican-Americans near Monterey, Calif.
