DEP fines Wal-Mart developers

Maine's Department of Environmental Protection has fined three companies developing a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Ellsworth.

The agency issued a $10,290 fine to W/S Ellsworth Properties, W/S Acadia Crossing and Sargent Corp. for violating Maine's Natural Resource Protection Act and Site Location of Development Law, according to the Ellsworth American. The department's February enforcement report states that last summer the companies removed woody vegetation from three wetland areas totaling 30,000 sq. ft. that were not part of the project's license.

The companies have agreed to restore two of the disturbed wetland areas, and have applied for an after-the-fact permit that would, if approved, allow the clearing of the third wetland area, the paper reports.
