Drivers lay off the pedal

Traffic in Maine dropped an estimated 7% in June compared with the same month last year, the second-largest monthly drop by any state in the nation, according to new data from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Nationally, Americans drove 4.7% less in June, according to the federal data. The only other state that saw a larger drop in driving was Idaho, which experienced a 7.7% decrease in June.

Local data supports the federal report. The Maine Turnpike Authority told the Portland Press Herald that the number of vehicles on the pike was down 4.1% in June from the same month last year and down 2.7% in July. For the year, traffic on the pike is down 1.5%.
