Freeport may see world-record influx of tourists this winter, Tripadvisor says

File Photo / William Hall Freeport, home to the L.L.Bean Inc. flagship store, shown here, is high on a global list of destinations interesting travelers this winter.

While Maine’s traditional peak season for tourism has ended, some communities are just gearing up for the arrival of winter visitors. And Freeport may turn out to be a hotspot, with a study predicting it will see one of the largest influxes of travelers in the world.

International travel website Tripadvisor ranks the Cumberland County town, a shopping mecca and home to L.L.Bean Inc., as No. 7 on a list of “fastest-growing destinations for Americans” this winter. The ranking is based on a survey of 2,400 consumers worldwide in October, as well as information searches on the website for travel between November and February 2022.

Further data detail wasn’t available, but the increase in searches from fall to winter puts Freeport in company with other sought-after destinations, shown below. For more information on the findings, click here.
