Eastern Slope Regional Airport in Fryeburg, which provides general aviation services for 17 towns in Maine and New Hampshire, will receive $520,000 in federal financing to help construct a new aircraft hangar.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded a $452,000 loan and a grant of $68,000 to the airport, according to a news release last week.

The funding will go toward a heated hangar for transient aircraft, allowing greater use of the airport during winter months, the USDA said.

The award comes from the department’s Community Facilities Direct Loan Program, which finances over 100 types of projects in rural communities, including infrastructure improvements, housing, business development and high-speed internet access. Congress appropriated $2.8 billion for Community Facilities loans and grants in fiscal year 2019.

During the recent round of funding, the USDA awarded $12 million to 41 projects in 17 states. Eastern Slope was the only recipient in New England.

In June, the airport was also awarded a $320,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration for hangar construction.

Eastern Slope is a public facility that handles a variety of recreational, business and charter flights, as well as emergency transportation in western Maine. The airport currently has a hangar with leased space, as well as a terminal, passenger lounge and a 4,200-foot runway.
