Gas prices continue to drop during summer driving season

For the second week in a row, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Maine dropped by four cents, to $2.24, continuing an extended streak of falling prices in the state despite being in the middle of the busy summer driving season.

During that same period, the average national price for a gallon of gas dropped by three cents to $2.20, according to the popular price-tracking website GasBuddy.

The $2.24 statewide average reported on Tuesday morning is higher than New Hampshire's average price of $2.16 per gallon, but two cents lower than the $2.26 price per gallon of Vermont.

“With global supplies of crude now showing signs of balance, especially with non-OPEC output falling nearly 1 million barrels a day, concern and attention is now being paid to the hangover from months of excess global oil production,” Gasbuddy Senior Petroleum Analyst Dan McTeague said in a release.
